1939 US Open Contestant Badge - Nelson's Only US Open Victory

This is an exceptionally solid example of the 1939 U.S. Open Contestants Badge with tremendous eye appeal. The 1 1/8" x 1 1/4" badge retains rich, deep coloring on its enamel, unscratched surface. This beauty was worn by contestant #140 in the field of 161 that competed in the 1939 Open, that number still resides on the back of this pin along with the original pin mounting. The champion in the 1939 Open was Byron Nelson who entered a 18-hole three way playoff with Denny Schute and Craig Wood following the regulation 72 holes. Nelson and Wood remained tied after the 18-hole playoff requiring another 18 holes between the two which Lord Byran would win completing his second of five major championships. In The Golf Auctions Summer 2013 auction a similar 1939 contestants badge sold for $1,482.

Please note: This auction will end at 7:00pm EST on November 16th with extended bidding to follow. All items in the auction will remain open until no items have received a bid within a 15 minute time period. All lots are free to be bid on until extended bidding has ended.
