1935 Masters Program Signed By Champ Sarazen, R-Up Wood, & LA Little

Presented in this lot is an unparalleled opportunity to acquire a rare 1935 Masters program not only signed by champion Gene Sarazen on the cover, but also runner-up and playoff adversary Craig Wood as well as the '35 tournament's Low Amateur in Lawson Little. Each of these gentlemen were large contributors to the second edition of the Masters and one of the most memorable events and tournaments in Masters Tournament history. There are said to be around 30 known 1934 Masters programs still in existence. There are even fewer 1935 the Augusta National Invitation Tournament programs in this condition. This is a newly discovered 1935 program, a little more special than its contemporaries. Note the ‘Masters’ in parenthesis above, that is to remind everyone that the Masters Tournament back in 1935 was not called the ‘Masters’, it was in fact referred to as the Augusta National Invitational Tournament. This program was referred to as a Yearbook, but for all intents and purposes we will refer to it as a program. In addition to each hole layout and its suggested strategy, pictured are select members of the 1935 golf club, along with leading contestants and the (only) past champion Horton Smith. For any serious collector it is a must have, this being one of the very few 1935 Programs remaining after nearly 87 years. Final round Sunday April 7th, 1935 featured the miraculous feat that is simply known as "The Shot Heard 'Round the World!" From 'The Squire' Gene Sarazen's 4-wood on the 235 Yard Par 5 15th Hole, only the 2nd edition of the 'Tradition Unlike Any Other' (Augusta Invitation Tournament) included something that would be almost too good to be true - even at The Masters. Sarazen trailed the leader Craig Wood by three shots at the time, and made them up all at once. It led to Sarazen's tournament triumph in a playoff over Craig Wood the following day over 36 holes - the only 36 hole playoff in Masters history. At the time of his second shot a check for $1,500, the winning prize, had already been written to Craig Wood, who had finished his round. Wood would have to wait another six years before finally winning his Masters title. The one-of-a-kind program is complete, and with no restoration. The brick red color on the cover is accented by the vibrant Augusta Green, as well as the tan and soft burnt orange. The binding is good and the program has an expected compact fold down the center and overall cover wear from transportation while obtaining the important three signatures. As every collector knows, pictures displaying the pages being raised are only an example of the binding being intact, please observe the pictures provided. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity comes with this lot.
