1934 US Open Lawson Little Wire Photo - Driving

The 1934 U.S. Open was the first contested by the United States Golf Association at Merion. Offered here is a wire photo from that 1934 Open of Lawson Little driving a ball. 1934 was the first year that both Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson played in a U.S. Open. The big Spaniard Olin Dutra came back from eight shots back to beat Gene Sarazen and claim the '34 Open title. His 36-hole comeback from 8 down was the largest in US Open history until Arnold Palmer matched it in 1960. Dutra was the first U.S. Open champion born in the western United States, hailing from California. For the 33-year-old it marked his second major championship victory after having triumphed in the 1932 PGA Championship at Keller Golf Club.
