1934 'Bobby Jones' Golf Course Description by Dr. Alister MacKenzie Pamphlet
Description of the 'Bobby Jones' Golf Course by Alister Mackenzie is missing the sketch of Fruitlands, in other few known examples it was taken out in order to frame for display. With publication in Augusta Georgia dated 1934 the earliest of club guides remains in excellent condition. This short history and hole-by-hole description of what was to become the Augusta National Golf Club was privately printed in Augusta by Ridgely-Tidwell, Co., Augusta Ga. The 16 pages of information give a detailed hole by hole description (before the front and back nice were flipped) including the never realized Nineteenth hole.
For accuracy only, and not as a disclaimer that this artifact from the earliest days of the Augusta National is in diminished condition we mention that there is minimal color fading present, and the lower spine is separated along a 1 1/4" distance leading to the staple. This pamphlet was used as a prospectus for new members to the Augusta National. This prized publication originates from the collection of J. "Reed" Henderson who was involved in the course original opening in January of 1933 and has other items from this time period which also appear in other auction lots. With the 19th hole paragraph crossed out, it can be speculated that this was a proof copy which was quickly altered when plans for the 19th hole were quickly amended. A most significant work of early Augusta National printed matter with dating specifically to the magical 1934 first year of the Augusta Invitational.
