1934 Augusta National Inv. 'The Masters' Practice Rd Amen Corner Press Photo - March 17th
Photographic excellence! Positioned in between shadows is a scene that does not look like The Masters - but it was, the first! On Bobby Jones' birthday March 17th, 1934, this nearly unimaginable Masters practice round Type I photo was captured at what is now known as Amen Corner. Two contestants with their caddies tee off over Rae's creek with a log bench and ball washer the only course additions. It is the tee for the 4th hole and with fairway of number 2 in the background. It's hard to believe there was a time in which The Masters Tournament was an unproven concept. There was no defending champion. No green jacket. No Par 3 contest. No Hogan's bridge and no patrons. Horton Smith wasn't a Masters champion. The list of current traditions that have been formed since is expansive and will not be written in its entirety. This crystal clear shot was shot by a discerning eye, post swing and another group seen walking up the fairway. Welcomed contrast of lights and darks, framing the scene and timing are all maximized. Historians of both golf and the tournament, or merely an investor with a keen eye for value potential, will have great interest in this acquisition. The verso contains multiple pencil notations including 'Golf Courses - GA Augusta National' and 'Sport Weds' and the Associated Press Photo stamping including the significant date of March 17, 1934. 7" x 6"
