1929 Ryder Cup Teams Signed Menu - Includes Two B&W Photos

In 1929 The United States Ryder Cup team traveled to Great Britain for the 2nd Ryder Cup match to be held at Moortown Golf club in Leeds England on April 26-27. Following the match (which the American team would lose by a score of 7-5), they were hosted at The Whitecraigs Golf Club in Glasgow Scotland for a luncheon and match with the country’s leading amateur golfers. Offered here is an extremely rare Luncheon menu from that event, signed in pencil by every member of the American team (inside signature page) and all of the amateurs (back cover signature page). In addition, there are two black and white unpublished photographs one of each team and two short newspaper articles. Signatures of the American team included their captain, Walter Hagen, A____ Walker, Joe Turnesa, Robert Harlow (the Manager), J.M Barclay, Ed Dudley, Johnny Farrell, John Golden, Al Watrous, Leo Diegel, Gene Sarazen, Horton Smith, D.L. Hughson, and Abe Espinosa, Ten amateurs signed the program as well.A few weeks later, the Americans would garner some revenge as Walter Hagen captured his 4th Open Championship at Muirfield East Lothian Scotland and the Americans placed 7 in the top ten, including the first three. This program and each photo remain in ex-mint condition with no obvious creases to any of the three items apparent. Most collectors will immediately see the value of two signatures contained here those being Horton Smith and Walter Hagen. But lets dig deeper, and take a look at two which appear on this tremendous collectable, flying under the radar so to speak. First we have the valuable signature of Hall of Famer Leo Diegel. He was elected to the Hall in 2003 some 52 years after his passing in 1951. Diegel was selected for each of the first four Ryder Cup teams in the same time frame he was able to capture back-to-back PGA Championships in 1928,29. Adding to the scarcity of this signature was a car accident Diegel had in 1938, while he was in his 30's, that ended his Tour career and many signing opportunities. Of note also when it comes to scarce golf autographs is the autograph of Johnny Golden who played in each of the first two United States Ryder Cups matches teaming with Hagan for foursome wins in both and adding a singles win in 1927 for a perfect 3-0-0 career mark. Golden, however, passed away at only 39 of pneumonia in 1936. The first of his teammates to decease, a seldom seen signature in any format. As described by our advanced collecting consignor of this treasure. "This item is the second best collectable I own". We are pleased to have it as a featured item in our Ryder Cup offering. If you are serious about the quality of your collection. This is one you need to take a hard look at, as it's never coming around again.
