1922 Edward 'Ted' Ray Post-Swing 'The Sport General Press Agency Ltd' Original Photo Framed


Stamped with the press agency 'The Sport General' just below the image to the right is this mounted post-swing photo of Ted Ray with a pipe hanging out of his mouth and a top hat, his patented look. The verso of this photo contains further notation on the verso. 'Original 1922 - Won American Open - Returned to England on Mauitania, where there was a steward who became a famous comedian, he adopted the name of Ted Ray. Then also the brothers of Ted Ray where also sportsman One was quite famous as the Duke of Leeds J. Class Yacht for many years, and his brother also contained for Lypton. All brothers originating from Jersey. Ray Family." This information is typed on a sheet of paper and affixed to the backside of the frame as the frame covers the backside itself.

Edward "Ted" Ray was a great British golfer, with a career that spanned decades. Ray won 2 Major tournaments, the 1912 Open Championship and the 1920 US Open. Ray was born in Jersey, the same island country that brought us Harry Vardon. It was in fact Vardon that Ray defeated by four strokes in 1912 to claim the Claret Jug. The following year, Ray joined Vardon on an exhibition tour in the United states that culminated at the 1913 US Open. The 20 year old Francis Ouimet stunned the Brits, who were heavily favored, Beating Ray and Vardon by 5 strokes in a playoff. Ray and Vardon's chance for redemption came at the 1920 US Open, where Ray was victorious by one stroke over Vardon, Jock Hutchison, and two others. 24" x 18" (pencil notated)

AUCTION CLOSING RULES:


Place your bids NOW as this auction will close beginning at 10:00pm EDT Sunday, February 5th. When placing your INITIAL bid in the auction, you must agree to the terms BEFORE confirming your bid. Each lot will have its own 30 minute countdown clock during extended bidding. The clock will extend 30-minutes from the time of the most recently placed bid for that lot. If no bids are placed on that lot during a 30-minute period, the lot will close. Place your bids now!

1. Place your initial bids BEFORE 10pm ET to bid on the item in extended bidding
2. During extended bidding, you may bid only on items you PREVIOUSLY placed a bid on.
3. Lots with only ONE or NO BIDS will close at 10pm ET

Extended bidding starts at 10pm ET, and each lot will begin closing with its own 30-minute countdown timer. Lots without a bid during extended bidding will close at 10:30pm ET. We recommend you place your maximum bid(s) prior to that time. Thank you
