1917 Pinehurst CC Spring Tournament Sterling Trophy Won by Abram Darst Wilt Jr.
This lot presents an incredible trophy from Pinehurst Country Club in 1917. Its recipient Abram Darst Wilt was by trade an engineer of the highest regard who at the time of this event was the president and general manager of The Schweppe and Wilt Manufacturing Co. of Detroit, Michigan. Wilt had a significant career making invention when he designed the Wilt automatic drill machine steering connections for automobiles. A success also at his recreation of golf Wilt claimed this trophy with a maximum height of 2 3/4" and a diameter of 8". Pinehurst at this time was the favorite get-away for professional golfers and the elite set like Wilt who wanted to test their game against the best of amateur competition. The best of the best in golf challenges of the day was known as Pinehurst Course 2, designed by Donald Ross it was the mecca of golf in America during the Teens. Inscription reads:
