1917 Sterling Chevy Chase Club Tombstone Match Trophy

This is an uncommon trophy given to the winner of a “Tombstone” match held in 1917 at The Chevy Chase Club in Washington DC. In Tombstone tournaments players are given a specific allotment of strokes for the round. You attempt to get the farthest around the course with your allotment of strokes. Where your round “dies” (you run out of strokes) is where your ""tombstone"" is erected. The person who got furthest around the course with their allotment of strokes wins the tournament. The front to the trophy is inscribed “Tombstone Match, Mixed Foursome, May 25 1917; Presented by Mrs. Floyd P. Waggaman , Won by L. W. J. Ekengren &Ralph Jenkins. Although the trophy is not inscribed for the Chevy Chase Golf Club, the match result is documented per an article in the Saturday May 26 Washington Post. The rear of the trophy is uniquely mounted with a golf club and a golf ball on a chain. The trophy is made of 9.2 oz of sterling silver and stands 8 ¼ inches tall. Makes a great conversation piece and display for the golf room.
