1912 Pinehurst CC 2nd Annual Amateur-Professional Golf Tournament Sterling Trophy
This lot features an exquisite trophy from the 2nd Annual Amateur-Professional Golf Tournament held at Pinehurst. This event in 1914 was the proving ground for none other then Walter Hagen who won this tournament in March that year and went on to win the U.S. Open in June the same year. All early Pinehurst professional trophies are extremely desirable and significant for the quality of golfers who assembled to compete (think Hagen, Mike Brady, Tom McNamara, etc). However, we believe that the offered example is one of, if not the, finest of all known, not just for the event which is memorialized by the trophy, but for the extraordinary condition it displays. Pinehurst Resort located in Pinehurst, North Carolina was an early mecca for golf at the turn-of-the-century in the United States. It was the proving ground for both amateurs and professional golfers of the age especially in the month of March when top events like the North and South were contested. At the time a final train stop for the rich and famous looking to escape the chill of winter in this noted golf resort town. Inscription reads:
