1910 US Amateur Championship at The Country Club Contestants Badge - William C. Fownes Winner
On the heels of one of the earliest known US Open Contestant's Badge being won in our previous auction, we are privileged to have the opportunity in offering for you in this our December year end auction a piece never seen by most of the golf collecting world's eyes. The feature lot #1 is the earliest known US Amateur contestant's badge, a 1910 US Amateur Contestant's Badge from The Country Club at Brookline. William C. Fownes Jr. defeated Warren K. Wood, 4 and 3, but not before defeating Chick Evans in the semi-finals 1up after being down two with 4 holes to play! William C. Fownes Jr. was the son of Oakmont Country Club founder and designer Henry Fownes.
Being one of the five charter clubs that founded the USGA, The Country Club at Brookline originally was founded 123 years ago in 1882, and is listed on the USGA's list of the first 100 clubs in America.
Measuring 1 1/4" diameter, stamping along the top rim is 'Amateur Championship' with The Country Club lettering script present in it's center. Just below the script is 'U.S.G.A.' and to complete the base of the medal is 'Brookline Sept 12 17 1910'. Reverse side shows the missing pin, hardly a draw from this astounding piece of golf history. Only one other example of this badge appears to be in existence, with this one being the first placed in auction for our bidding patrons.
*All winning bidders who pay their balance in full by December 18th will have their items by December 24th for all domestic shipments*
Please note: This auction will end at 7:00pm EST on December 13th with extended bidding to follow. All items in the auction will remain open until no items have received a bid within a 15 minute time period. All lots are free to be bid on until extended bidding has ended
