1890-1891 Boston Athletic Association Membership Ticket Issued to USGA President Herbert Jacques
3" x 2" Among the nation's oldest athletic clubs, the Boston Athletic Association was established on March 15, 1887 under its first president, Robert F. Clark, and with the support of George Walker Weld and other leading sports enthusiasts, entrepreneurs and politicians of the day.According to Article II of its 1890 Yearbook Constitution, their objective was to "encourage all manly sports and promote physical culture." In addition to such facilities as a gymnasium, bowling alley, billiard hall, Turkish baths and tennis courts, the Association also owned a shooting range and a country club.
Among the active sports of the day were boxing, fencing, water polo and athletics. The club held its first organized track and field competition in 1890 and in 1897 the first famed Boston Marathon took place. A unicorn was chosen as the Association's symbol and appears on the Boston Marathon medals to this day. Remains in excellent condition over both sides of badge.
THE HERBERT JACQUES COLLECTION - USGA PRESIDENT 1909 & 1910
Noteworthy in the fact that this material is "fresh" to the golf collecting hobby, having recently been located on the upper East Coast. It's original owner was Hebert Jacques a renowned New England industrialist, architect and golf enthusiast. He was a member at The Country Club, Brookline, Massachusetts known as the first 'country club' in the United States which also had the acclaim as being among the first five founding members of the U.S. Golf Association. Jacques ascended to the 1907-08 Executive Committee of the U.S.G.A and became the eighth President of the organization in 1909-10. He remained ingrained in the administrative side of the game as the President of the Massachusetts Golf Association when Brookline hosted the 1913 U.S. Open. Long after his death in 1916, Jacques family was still highly involved in golf with his son Herbert Jacques serving as President of the U.S.G.A in the term 1933-34.
